Whop vs Circle: Which Is Better for Paid Communities?

By MoveToWhopUpdated 9 min readPricing verified

MoveToWhop is independent and not affiliated with Whop, Inc. or any platform we cover. We may earn a referral commission from Whop when you create a Whop through our links. It never costs you anything, and it's how we keep migrations free. How we make money

Quick answer

Whop is cheaper at every revenue level we modeled. At $10,000 a month in $25 memberships, Circle costs $779 on the Professional plan billed monthly and Whop costs $440, because Circle stacks a plan fee and a 2% cut on Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ and 0.7% billing. Circle's edge is community depth: workflows, AI agents, custom-branded apps and payments in your own Stripe.

Our verdict

Choose Whop if

you mainly sell access to chat, forums and courses and want the lowest fees, PayPal and crypto checkout, and marketplace reach

Choose Circle if

your community depends on Circle's workflows, AI agents or a custom-branded app, or you want payments to stay in your own Stripe account

Pricing and fees: what you actually pay

In the Circle vs Whop pricing question, structure decides most of the answer. Circle charges a monthly plan plus a percentage of every paywall sale on top of Stripe, while Whop has no plan and takes its cut per sale.

Prices as of October 2026. Sources at the end of this page.

PlanBilled monthlyBilled annually (per month)Platform fee per saleAdmins and spaces

Circle ScaleNot published$4191%10 admins, 100 spaces
Circle PlusQuoteQuote0.5%Unlimited
Whop$0$0NoneNo plan limits published

Stripe then charges 2.9% + 30¢ per card payment on Circle, plus 0.7% for Stripe Billing on subscription and installment paywalls. Circle's own fee example for a Business-plan subscription adds up to 1% + 2.9% + 30¢ + 0.7%. On Whop, a domestic card payment costs 2.7% + 30¢, and subscriptions add a 0.5% billing fee (Whop's fee page, checked October 3, 2026).

What you pay at three revenue levels

At every level we tried, Whop costs less than any Circle plan, and the gap grows with revenue.

Prices as of October 2026. Sources at the end of this page.

Monthly revenue ($25 memberships)ChargesCircle ProfessionalCircle BusinessCircle ScaleWhop
$1,00040$167$277$477$44

$50,0002,000$3,499$3,119$3,319$2,200

The formula is plan price + revenue × (platform fee + processing percentage) + charges × 30¢. Professional and Business are billed month to month ($99 and $219). Scale uses its $419 annual-billing rate because Circle doesn't publish a monthly price for it. Every charge is a US card renewal of a $25 membership.

What the table shows:

  • At $10,000 a month, Whop costs $339 less than Circle Professional, or about $4,068 a year.
  • Business becomes cheaper than Professional above about $12,000 a month, where its 1% lower fee covers the $120 higher price.
  • Scale never beats Business on fees alone, since it costs $200 more for the same 1%. You'd pick it for limits and AI agents.
  • There's no crossover with Whop. Circle's lowest published percentage, 0.5% on Circle Plus, still totals 4.1% + 30¢ with Stripe, against Whop's 3.2% + 30¢.

Costs the tables leave out

Both platforms have charges outside the base rate. On Whop: 1.5% extra for international cards, 1% for currency conversion, $0.07 for Radar fraud screening per transaction, $15 per dispute, payout fees ($2.50 for next-day ACH, 4% + $1 for instant), and 2% if you turn on Whop's tax collection.

On Circle: Stripe's own international and conversion surcharges, Stripe Tax if you enable it, and add-ons priced on Circle's site. Email Hub costs $19 a month for up to 1,000 contacts and $99 at 10,000 (first 30 days free), extra admins cost $10 a month each, and extra spaces $20 a month per 10. Circle also bills storage over your plan's limit in 50 GB blocks from $10 a month, and extra Circle AI credits at $10 per 1,000. Run your own mix in the Circle fee calculator or see the full list of Whop fees.

Community features

Circle is the deeper community product. Whop covers the core with separate apps that you attach to a product.

On Circle, everything happens in spaces: posts, chat, events and courses, plus DMs and group chat, a member directory with rich profiles, and gamification. Live streams hold 100, 200 or 500 attendees on Professional, Business and Scale. Circle AI comes with 2,500 credits a month on Professional and Business and 5,000 on Scale, which also adds AI agents. Members get iOS, Android and desktop apps on every plan.

On Whop, you build the membership from apps. Chat handles real-time discussion, Forums threaded posts, Events live or in-person sessions with optional paid tickets, Content Notion-style pages, Files downloads, and Calendar Bookings paid or free one-to-one calls (Whop's app list). Members reach all of it in the Whop app on iOS and Android.

Bottom line: if members come for the conversation itself, with directories, rich profiles and live rooms, Circle does more. If they come for content, calls and a chat, Whop covers it.

Courses

Both platforms put courses inside the membership, and neither replaces a dedicated course platform. Circle runs courses as a space type, so lessons sit in the same sidebar as your discussions. Whop's Courses app handles multi-lesson courses with video, quizzes and progress tracking, and a course can be sold as its own product or bundled into a membership.

Moving courses off Circle is manual, since Circle documents no course export. The Circle to Whop migration guide shows how the outline-based rebuild works. If the course is your main product, look at course-first platforms in our Teachable alternatives roundup as well.

Bottom line: close to a tie for most creators.

Payments and payouts

Circle gives you ownership of the payment account. Whop gives you more ways to get paid and lower fees, but everything runs on its own processor.

Circle paywalls run through a Stripe account you own. Customer records and saved cards stay in your Stripe, payouts follow your Stripe schedule (the first one usually takes 7 to 14 days), and you can add Stripe Tax to calculate and collect tax, though you still register, file and remit. Circle supports Stripe only, so PayPal isn't available.

Whop runs every sale through Whop Payments, and Whop is the merchant of record. Checkout takes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, crypto, ACH and several buy now, pay later providers (financing needs approval and costs 15% per financed sale). Standard payouts take up to 5 business days, and instant payouts arrive in minutes for 4% + $1. Whop can hold a reserve on new or higher-risk accounts (its docs give a 10%, 90-day example), and new sellers are capped at $2,500 per checkout until Whop approves higher amounts.

Bottom line: Whop wins on cost and payment options, and Circle wins on control.

Email and automation

Circle builds a lot of marketing and automation into the community itself, so list what you use before you compare. Email Hub, a Circle add-on, sends broadcasts and automated emails from inside the community and is priced by contact count: free under 100 contacts, $19 a month up to 1,000 and $99 at 10,000. Business includes 20 workflow automations, Scale makes them unlimited and adds AI agents, and both include Circle's APIs.

None of that transfers when you leave. If you move, export your Email Hub contacts, write down each workflow, and check how Whop's current marketing and automation tools cover them before you set a date. Our Whop vs Kajabi comparison looks at Whop's marketing side next to an all-in-one marketing platform.

Bottom line: Circle's built-in automation runs deep, so map yours before you decide.

Marketplace and affiliates

Both companies run a marketplace, but they work differently. Whop's Discover marketplace lists live Whops and has charged a 0% commission on marketplace sales since May 12, 2025. Whop also has an affiliate program where you set the commission, with a 1.25% processing fee on affiliate-referred sales.

Circle Discover is curated. Creators on a paid plan fill in a request form, and Circle's team reviews it before the listing goes live.

Bottom line: Whop, if you want open marketplace and affiliate reach without a revenue share.

When Circle is the better choice

Circle is the better pick in these situations:

  1. Your branded app is part of what members pay for. Circle Plus builds custom iOS and Android apps with branded push notifications, and Whop doesn't list a white-label app.
  2. Your community runs on Circle's automation. Workflows, AI agents and Email Hub are part of your Circle setup, and every one of them has to be rebuilt if you leave.
  3. You want the payment relationship in your own name. On Circle, customers and saved cards sit in your Stripe account, which keeps future moves open, while Whop never lets you connect your own Stripe.
  4. You're on a Circle plan bought before March 1, 2026. Circle keeps those legacy limits only while you stay on that plan, and you may not be able to buy the same limits again.

When Whop is the better choice

Whop is the better pick in these situations:

  1. You sell memberships and fees are a real line item. Whop cost less than every Circle plan at every revenue level we modeled.
  2. Your buyers want more ways to pay, such as PayPal, crypto, ACH or buy now, pay later.
  3. You want marketplace and affiliate reach without a commission on marketplace sales.
  4. Your community is chat, forums and a course or two, and you don't depend on Circle's workflows or a custom-branded app.

Whop's limitations, stated plainly

  • No way to bring your own Stripe. Payouts depend on Whop's risk decisions, including reserves and the $2,500 per-checkout cap for new accounts.
  • Members aren't added for you. Each person claims access with a Whop account, because Whop's API has no way to create memberships directly.
  • Course video files need re-uploading, and old community posts don't transfer.
  • Sellers on Reddit have posted about reserves and slow support in 2026, so read our seller-side Whop review before moving a large business.

What creators report

Public reviews point to the same trade-offs the numbers show. These are individual experiences, not representative samples.

  • A two-star Trustpilot reviewer of Circle (October 1, 2026) said total payment costs reached about 10% in their setup, and that leaving was painful because Stripe couldn't be disconnected until every active subscription was cancelled (review).
  • A four-star Trustpilot reviewer (September 23, 2026) said their customers love Circle but listed fees and AI credit limits as the downsides (review).
  • On r/whop, a seller described a 90-day rolling reserve placed after about $20,000 in sales, with slow answers from support (thread). Whop's reserve policy says reserves can apply to new accounts or when refunds and disputes run high.
  • Another r/whop thread complains that AI-first support wouldn't escalate an account issue to a person (thread).

Switching from Circle to Whop

You don't start from zero if you move. Circle paywalls bill through your own Stripe account, so Whop Migrations can carry active card subscriptions across with their renewal dates, and your member list comes from Circle's audience export. Courses, posts and automations are rebuilt by hand, and members who subscribed through a branded app re-join on Whop. The step-by-step Circle to Whop plan covers the order of operations, including why you should keep Stripe connected to Circle until the old subscriptions end, and the free migration wizard sets up your products, courses and community apps.

How we compared

We compared the published pricing pages, fee schedules and help-center articles of Circle and Whop, checked on October 3, 2026. Both platforms get the same fee assumptions: US cards, $25 monthly memberships, every charge a renewal, and Circle's monthly-billing prices where Circle publishes them. We haven't run the same community on both platforms side by side, so feature notes describe what each company documents. Creator experiences come from public Trustpilot reviews and Reddit threads gathered on October 2, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is Whop better than Circle?

For selling access at the lowest cost, yes. Whop has no plan fee and charges 3.2% + 30¢ on a subscription charge, while Circle charges $89 to $419 a month plus at least 4.6% + 30¢ once Stripe is included. If your community runs on Circle's workflows, AI agents or a custom-branded app, Circle may still be the better home. Decide by which Circle features you'd have to rebuild.

Circle vs Whop fees: which is cheaper?

Whop, at every revenue level we modeled. With $25 monthly memberships, Circle Professional billed monthly costs $167 at $1,000 a month, $779 at $10,000 and $3,499 at $50,000, against $44, $440 and $2,200 on Whop. Even Circle Plus, with the lowest Circle fee at 0.5%, pays 4.1% + 30¢ per subscription charge once Stripe's fees are added.

Can I use Circle and Whop together?

Yes, but access won't sync on its own. You could sell on Whop and invite buyers into Circle by hand or through an automation tool, while still paying Circle's plan fee and a fee on any Circle paywall sales. For most creators that only makes sense as a short overlap during a move, while members claim their Whop access.

Does Whop have a branded mobile app like Circle Plus?

Not one that Whop lists. Your members use the Whop app on iOS and Android, and we found no white-label app option in Whop's documentation as of October 2026. Circle includes its own iOS, Android and desktop apps on every plan and offers custom-branded iOS and Android apps on Circle Plus, which is priced by quote.

Can I keep my own Stripe account if I move to Whop?

No. Whop processes every sale through Whop Payments, where Whop is the merchant of record, so you can't connect your own Stripe the way Circle paywalls do. Moving in that direction does work for existing subscribers: because Circle subscriptions live in your Stripe, Whop Migrations can copy active card subscriptions into Whop with their renewal dates.

Does Circle charge a transaction fee on top of Stripe?

Yes. Circle adds 2% on Professional, 1% on Business and Scale, and 0.5% on Circle Plus to every paywall payment, shown as a Stripe application fee next to Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ and the 0.7% Stripe Billing fee on subscriptions. Circle refunds its own fee automatically only when you issue the refund from Circle, not from the Stripe dashboard.

Which is better for selling courses, Whop or Circle?

Neither is a full course platform. Circle runs courses as a space type next to your discussions, and Whop's Courses app covers video lessons, quizzes and progress tracking. If certificates, compliance tracking or SCORM matter to your buyers, compare a course-first platform such as Thinkific or LearnWorlds before you choose between these two.
