By MoveToWhopUpdated 9 min readPricing verified

MoveToWhop is independent and not affiliated with Whop, Inc. or any platform we cover. We may earn a referral commission from Whop when you create a Whop through our links. It never costs you anything, and it's how we keep migrations free. How we make money

Quick answer

On a US card subscription, Whop charges 2.7% + 30¢ plus 0.5% billing and Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ plus 0.7% for Billing, so Whop costs about $40 less per $10,000 of $49 renewals. Whop also bundles checkout, courses and community apps, and says it's the merchant of record. Stripe wins on free standard payouts, included fraud screening, card-data portability and developer control.

How Whop and Stripe differ

Stripe is payments infrastructure you build on, while Whop is a place to sell with its own payments network built in. That makes the Stripe vs Whop decision mostly a question of how much of your business you want to assemble and own yourself.

With Stripe, you're the merchant. You get card processing, subscriptions through Stripe Billing, fraud screening and tax tools, and you supply the checkout pages, content delivery and community access, either with no-code Payment Links or with your own code.

With Whop, checkout, courses, chat, forums, Discord and Telegram access, and payouts all run inside Whop, and Whop's docs say Whop is the merchant of record on Whop Payments. Whop's October 2025 payments launch post says Whop Payments began as a wrapper around Stripe Connect and now runs on Whop's own infrastructure, routing payments across several providers.

Pricing and fees: what you actually pay

For US card subscriptions, Whop's published rate is 0.4 percentage points lower than Stripe with Billing: 3.2% + 30¢ per renewal against 3.6% + 30¢. Neither charges a monthly fee.

Worked example: a $49-a-month membership

Fees as of October 2026, from docs.whop.com/fees and stripe.com/pricing. Sources at the end of this page.

Monthly revenueCharges at $49Whop feesStripe feesDifference

$10,000204$381$421$40
$50,0001,020$1,906$2,106$200

How we calculated it: fees = revenue × rate + (revenue ÷ $49) × $0.30. Whop's rate is 2.7% card processing plus 0.5% subscription billing. Stripe's is 2.9% plus 0.7% for Stripe Billing, which also applies to subscriptions sold through Payment Links. The example assumes US cards and monthly billing, with no add-ons, payout fees, taxes or currency conversion, rounded to whole dollars. Over a year, the gap comes to about $48, $480 and $2,400.

Where Stripe comes out cheaper

The headline rate favors Whop, but four line items can flip the result:

  • Whop's fee page lists Radar fraud screening at $0.07 per transaction, while Stripe includes Radar in its standard pricing. If that fee applies to every charge, Stripe costs less for subscriptions under $17.50 a month ($0.07 ÷ 0.4%) and one-time sales under $35 ($0.07 ÷ 0.2%).
  • Stripe's standard payouts are free. Whop's fee page lists $2.50 per next-day ACH payout and 4% + $1 for instant bank deposits, so withdrawing weekly costs about $130 a year.
  • Stripe Tax starts at 0.5% per transaction where you're registered. Whop's managed tax options cost 2% per transaction, although one of them also remits the tax for you in the US, UK and EU.
  • Whop's optional orchestration adds 0.8%, which lifts a renewal to 4.0% + 30¢, above Stripe's 3.6%.

Both companies negotiate at volume. Stripe offers custom packages with IC+ pricing and volume discounts for large businesses, and Whop's October 2025 launch post put enterprise card rates as low as 2.5% + 30¢. If you process a lot, get a quote from both.

Fees that match, or depend on your setup

Several charges are the same on both, and a few depend on how your buyers pay:

  • International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion adds 1% on both.
  • A dispute costs $15 on both. Stripe charges another $15 when you respond to a dispute manually and refunds it if you win.
  • For US bank debits, Stripe's ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% capped at $5. Whop's fee page lists ACH debit at 1.5% with a $5 cap.
  • Whop's buy now, pay later partners cost 15% per financed transaction.

Plug your own price and volume into the fee calculator, or see every line of Whop's fee schedule in our Whop fees breakdown. This page explains published fees. It isn't financial or tax advice.

Merchant of record, taxes and disputes

Whop's docs say Whop is the merchant of record on Whop Payments. On Stripe, you're the merchant unless you pay for Stripe's own merchant-of-record service.

Being on Whop doesn't mean Whop handles all your sales tax. For direct sales through checkout links, you pick one of three options: Whop calculates and collects tax and you remit it (2%), Whop collects and remits it in the US, UK and EU (2%), or you handle tax yourself (no fee). Whop's tax docs add that a managed option doesn't remove your own tax obligations, including tracking where you have nexus. On sales through Whop's Discover marketplace, Whop handles tax in the places it's registered.

Stripe offers the same pieces as separate products. Stripe Tax calculates and collects tax from 0.5% per transaction where you're registered. Stripe Managed Payments, its merchant-of-record service, costs 3.5% per transaction on top of payment fees and covers indirect tax compliance and remittance in more than 75 countries, plus fraud prevention, dispute management and customer support.

Disputes work much the same way on both. You submit evidence, the card issuer decides, and each dispute costs $15. Whop attaches access logs, policy disclosures and customer details to your case automatically and gives you 7 to 21 days to respond. Stripe adds a second $15 fee when you counter manually, refunded if you win.

If you want someone else to own sales tax from end to end, compare Whop's 2% collect-and-remit option, which covers only the US, UK and EU, with Stripe Managed Payments at 3.5%, against the countries you actually sell into.

Selling, checkout and delivery

Whop includes the storefront and the delivery. With Stripe, you assemble them from Stripe products and outside tools.

On Whop, a checkout link can be free, one-time or recurring, with free trials, setup fees, stock limits and promo codes. Whop's own apps deliver what the buyer paid for: Courses, Chat, Forums, and access to Discord or Telegram. Whop can also list your product in its Discover marketplace and runs an affiliate program, and affiliate sales add 1.25% in processing.

Stripe gives you Payment Links and Checkout for selling without code, plus Stripe Billing for subscriptions, with Smart Retries for failed payments, a self-serve customer portal and free trials. Stripe doesn't deliver anything, though. For a paid Discord or a course, you add a tool. LaunchPass, for example, charges $29 a month plus 3.5% per transaction on top of Stripe's fees for paid Discord and Telegram access. Our Whop vs LaunchPass comparison runs those numbers, and Whop vs Discord covers Discord's own server subscriptions.

If you plan to gate a Discord server or Telegram group with Whop, read the fee note on Whop's Discord or Telegram app page before you compare costs. It isn't reflected in Whop's general fee page or in the examples on this page (checked October 3, 2026).

Developers get more reach on Stripe. Every object is in its API, Connect handles payments between multiple parties, and you can design checkout however you like. Whop has a public API too, but you work inside Whop's model of products, plans and memberships.

For a creator selling access to content or a community, Whop removes a layer of tools. For a software product or a custom payment flow, Stripe's flexibility is worth more.

Payouts and account holds

Stripe pays out to US bank accounts for free on a two-business-day schedule. Whop lists a fee for each payout method and adds crypto and Venmo options. Both can hold back funds.

  • Stripe: US funds settle in 2 business days, and your first payout usually arrives 7 to 14 days after your first live payment. Instant Payouts cost 1.5% (50¢ minimum) and usually arrive within 30 minutes, but new accounts aren't eligible right away.
  • Whop: sale funds become withdrawable in 1 to 4 business days, with a $10 minimum withdrawal. Whop's payout page says standard payouts take up to 5 business days, while its troubleshooting page says to allow up to 10. Its fee page lists next-day ACH at $2.50 per payout, instant bank deposit at 4% + $1, crypto and Venmo at 5% + $1, and a wire at $23.

Whop's reserves page says it may hold part of your balance while your account is new or when refunds and disputes run high. Its example is 10% of each sale held for 90 days, and each hold shows a release date in your dashboard. Holds aren't unique to Whop. Stripe's own guide describes rolling reserves as a precaution processors take to cover chargebacks and refunds. In 2026, sellers on r/whop have posted about 90-day holds and AI-first support that wouldn't escalate to a human. Those are individual reports, not a measured rate, but they're worth weighing if cash flow is tight. Our Whop review covers the seller complaints in more depth.

Your data, and leaving later

Stripe will hand your customers' card data to another processor. Whop doesn't document a way to do the same, which makes leaving Whop harder than joining it.

Stripe's docs say it transfers card data to any PCI DSS Level 1 processor on request, excluding cards saved through Link. Subscriptions and payment history don't travel with the export, but they stay readable in your Stripe Dashboard as long as you keep the account. Moving in the other direction, from Stripe to Whop, takes one pass of Whop Migrations and keeps renewal dates. We found no equivalent export out of Whop in its docs (checked October 3, 2026), so if you ever leave Whop, plan on members re-subscribing.

When Stripe is the better choice

Stripe is the better pick in these situations:

  • You're building software. Usage-based billing, invoicing, Connect and a fully custom checkout matter more to you than built-in community apps.
  • Your prices are low. If Whop's $0.07 Radar fee applies to your charges, Stripe costs less on subscriptions under $17.50 a month and one-time sales under $35, and free standard payouts help sellers who withdraw small amounts often.
  • You want to own the processor relationship. Stripe lets you take card data to another processor, which keeps your options open.
  • You only need tax calculated and collected. Stripe Tax starts at 0.5% per transaction where you're registered, against 2% for Whop's managed tax options.
  • Your Stripe setup already works and costs little. If you don't pay a tool on top of Stripe, saving 0.4 points may not cover the work of switching, the Link and ACH payers who'd have to re-subscribe, and a possible reserve on a new Whop account.

When Whop is the better choice

Whop is the better pick in these situations:

  • You sell memberships, courses or coaching, and today you pay a separate tool on top of Stripe to deliver them.
  • Your renewals are mostly card payments above about $20, where Whop's rate stays below Stripe's 3.6% + 30¢ even with the $0.07 Radar fee added.
  • You want distribution. Whop's Discover marketplace and affiliate program can put your offer in front of buyers you wouldn't reach alone.
  • You want a merchant of record and optional tax collection without building anything.
  • You want PayPal, crypto and buy now, pay later at checkout, and crypto or Venmo payouts, managed from one dashboard.

Switching from Stripe to Whop

If your members already pay through your own Stripe account, you don't have to start over. Whop Migrations moves active and trialing card subscriptions of $1 or more, with each member's saved card and renewal date, and schedules the Stripe subscriptions to cancel at period end. Members who pay by Link, ACH or SEPA, or who have no email in Stripe, re-subscribe instead. Our guide to moving Stripe subscriptions to Whop covers each step, and the free migration tool sets up your Whop products before you run it.

How we compared

We compared published pricing and documentation, not live accounts. Whop figures come from docs.whop.com (fees, payouts, taxes, reserves and disputes) and Whop's blog, and Stripe figures come from stripe.com/pricing, Stripe's Billing pages and docs.stripe.com, all checked on October 3, 2026. Fee examples assume a US seller, US cards, monthly subscriptions and no optional add-ons unless a line says otherwise. Reddit posts are cited as individual reports. We didn't run test transactions on either platform.

Frequently asked questions

Is Whop better than Stripe?

For selling memberships, courses or paid community access, Whop usually costs less and replaces the tools you'd add to Stripe: US card renewals cost 3.2% + 30¢ on Whop against 3.6% + 30¢ on Stripe with Billing. Stripe is better for software, custom checkouts, and anyone who wants free standard payouts, included fraud screening and the ability to move card data to another processor.

Stripe vs Whop fees: which is cheaper?

On a $49 monthly renewal, Whop's published fees come to about $1.87 and Stripe's to about $2.06. Stripe pulls ahead in three places: low-priced items if Whop's $0.07 Radar fee applies (subscriptions under $17.50, one-time sales under $35), payouts (free on Stripe, $2.50 per next-day ACH payout on Whop) and tax calculation (0.5% on Stripe against 2% on Whop).

Does Whop use Stripe?

Not the way it used to. Whop's October 15, 2025 payments launch post says Whop Payments began as a wrapper around Stripe Connect and now runs on Whop's own infrastructure, routing payments across multiple payment providers it doesn't name. You can't run Whop's checkout through your own Stripe account. Whop's only documented Stripe connection is the Migrations tool for moving subscriptions in.

Can I use Whop and Stripe at the same time?

Yes, as separate systems. You can keep Stripe for a software product, invoices or existing subscribers and sell your community through Whop. What you can't do is process Whop's checkout on your Stripe account. When you're ready to consolidate, Whop Migrations can bring Stripe card subscriptions across, and it skips any subscription it already moved if you run it again.

Is Whop a merchant of record?

Whop's payout docs say Whop is the merchant of record on Whop Payments. For tax on direct sales you still choose: Whop collects (2%), Whop collects and remits in the US, UK and EU (2%), or you handle it for free. Whop adds that a managed option doesn't remove your own tax obligations. Stripe isn't your merchant of record unless you add Managed Payments at 3.5% per transaction.

Which pays out faster, Whop or Stripe?

For standard payouts, Stripe: US funds settle in 2 business days at no charge. On Whop, sale funds become withdrawable in 1 to 4 business days, and standard payouts take up to 5 more. Both offer instant payouts, at 1.5% (50¢ minimum) on Stripe once you're eligible and 4% + $1 on Whop.

Can I move my Stripe subscribers to Whop?

Yes, if they pay by card. Whop Migrations (Settings → Migrations → Stripe) moves active and trialing card subscriptions of $1 or more, keeps renewal dates and sets the Stripe subscriptions to cancel at period end. Members on Link, ACH or SEPA, with past-due subscriptions or with no email in Stripe re-subscribe on Whop instead.
