Move from Memberful to Whop: What Transfers and How to Switch

By MoveToWhopUpdated 11 min readPricing verified

MoveToWhop is independent and not affiliated with Whop, Inc. or any platform we cover. We may earn a referral commission from Whop when you create a Whop through our links. It never costs you anything, and it's how we keep migrations free. How we make money

Quick answer

Memberful keeps your members' cards in your own Stripe account but runs every renewal itself, so Whop Migrations has no Stripe subscriptions to move. Members re-subscribe on Whop. Your plans become Whop plans, your member list comes from Memberful's CSV export, and each member gets a free trial that ends on their Memberful renewal date. Export before you close Memberful, because closing deletes your data. At $10,000 a month, Whop costs $509 less.

What moves

Memberful to Whop at a glance

This is what the free migration tool does for Memberful today. Rows marked Guided or From your export need some input from you: a confirmation in the wizard or the file Memberful gives you.

  • Products & pricing

    Moves

You confirm your products and prices in the wizard (prefilled where we can). We create matching Whop products and pricing plans through Whop's official API.

  • Courses

    N/A

Memberful doesn't have this, so there's nothing to move.

  • Members

    From export

Upload the member export from Memberful. We clean it and set up a hidden "Existing members" option on Whop: free claim links for one-time buyers, and for subscribers, a plan with a free trial that lines up their first Whop charge with their next Memberful renewal. Whop's API can't add members directly, so members claim access from the link you send.

  • Community

    N/A

Memberful doesn't have this, so there's nothing to move.

  • Paying subscribers

    Re-subscribe

Memberful keeps cards in your Stripe but runs billing itself, so Whop's Stripe migration finds no subscriptions. Members re-subscribe; export before you close Memberful (closing deletes data).

Guided:
you confirm or paste it in the wizard, and we create it on Whop.

What transfers from Memberful to Whop

Your plans, your member list and your Discord access can all move. Paying subscriptions can't, even though the cards sit in your own Stripe account, so every paying member re-subscribes on Whop with a free trial that covers the time they've already paid for.

The "What moves" table on this page shows the support level for each part. Here's what each one means for a Memberful creator.

Plans become Whop products and plans. You confirm each Memberful plan's name and price in the free MoveToWhop migration tool, and it creates a matching product and plans on Whop through Whop's official API. Since April 13, 2026, one Memberful plan can hold several prices, such as monthly and annual, so create a Whop plan for each price you still sell.

Your member list comes from Memberful's export. Go to Members, set the filter to All members, then choose Actions, then Export CSV. The file has one row per subscription, with each member's plan, whether it's active, whether it auto-renews and its expiration date, plus their Stripe customer ID and Discord user ID. The migration tool turns that file into a hidden "Existing members" access option on Whop: a free claim link for free members, and for paying members a plan at their current price with a free trial that runs until their Memberful renewal date. Whop's API can't create memberships directly, so each member claims access with their own Whop account.

Courses and community don't apply. Memberful has no course or community product of its own. Its docs connect courses through WordPress plugins such as LearnDash, and communities through Discord, Discourse, Circle and others. If you sell a LearnDash course through Memberful, rebuild it in Whop Courses and re-upload the videos or embed them from YouTube or Loom. A Discord server stays put, and only the bot that hands out roles changes.

Why can't Whop's Stripe migration move Memberful members?

Because Memberful doesn't create Stripe subscriptions. Memberful's docs say it manages member subscriptions inside Memberful, stores the cards with Stripe, and charges each card in Stripe when a renewal is due. When Memberful imports members from another tool, it deletes their Stripe subscriptions to avoid duplicate charges.

Whop Migrations needs those subscriptions. Whop launched it on June 17, 2026, and it moves active and trialing card subscriptions of $1 or more from a Stripe account you own, as long as the customer has an email, keeping each renewal date. With no Stripe subscriptions behind your Memberful members, there's nothing for it to read.

Check it yourself before you plan. Open your Stripe Dashboard, go to Billing, then Subscriptions. If your Memberful members don't appear there as active subscriptions, plan on re-subscribing. Memberful's own process for switching Stripe accounts copies cards between Stripe accounts and then needs a resync from Memberful support, so it doesn't open a path to Whop either.

Our guide to moving paid subscriptions compares the Stripe and re-subscribe paths across 19 platforms. The steps below apply the re-subscribe path to Memberful.

How the switch works, step by step

Export first, build on Whop second, announce third, and turn off Memberful billing last. In that order, nobody loses access and nobody pays twice.

  1. Export everything. Download the member export with the All members filter, the subscriptions export for each plan (Members, then Subscriptions), your orders (Revenue, then Orders) and your cancellations (Revenue, then Cancellations).
  2. Sort your members. Use the Active, Auto-renew and Expiration date columns to separate auto-renewing subscribers, members who've turned auto-renew off, free members, gift recipients and externally paid group members. The free member CSV converter cleans and de-duplicates the file in your browser.
  3. Create your Whop and connect it with Sign in with Whop inside the migration tool. We never ask for your Memberful or Whop password.
  4. Confirm your plans and prices. The tool creates one Whop product with a plan for each price.
  5. Upload your member file. The tool sets up claim links for free members and trial-aligned plans for paying members.
  6. If members get Discord access, add Whop's Discord app with its own roles (see the Discord section below).
  7. Announce a switching window with each member's personal link and first Whop charge date. Our migration announcement templates have reminder and last-call versions.
  8. Turn off Memberful auto-renew in bulk as members join, or at your deadline: Members, then Subscriptions, then Bulk edit subscriptions, then Disable auto-renew.
  9. Close Memberful last. Wait until the last Memberful billing period has ended, export one more time, then close the account from Settings.

How to keep members and avoid double billing

A member pays twice only if Memberful renews them after their Whop trial has ended. Use the expiration date in your export as the trial end, and turn off Memberful auto-renew before that date arrives.

For a subscription that auto-renews, the expiration date is the day Memberful would charge next. A Whop trial that ends that day makes the first Whop charge replace a Memberful charge instead of adding to it.

Turning off auto-renew is the safe way to stop Memberful billing. Memberful's bulk edit tool describes Disable auto-renew as cancelling each subscription at its next renewal date, and a cancelled member keeps access until the subscription expires. Deleting a subscription removes access immediately, so don't use it for this. Bulk edits don't notify members, so your announcement has to explain what's happening. Members can also click Cancel subscription in their own Memberful account, which is the clearest instruction to give them right after they join Whop.

Annual members need longer trials, since someone who renewed in March still has months of paid time. Give them a trial that runs to their expiration date, or a shorter trial plus extra time once they join: in Whop, open Dashboard, then Users, then Memberships, use the three-dot menu and choose Add free days, which moves their next charge date.

Three groups need their own message:

  • Members who've already turned auto-renew off. The same trial-aligned link costs them nothing until their Memberful time runs out, so send it with a softer note.
  • Externally paid group members. Memberful records wire and cheque payments for group plans as external payments, with no card on file. Send the group manager claim links and agree on billing directly.
  • Gift recipients. A gift doesn't renew, so a free claim link is enough.

Keep paying Memberful's $49 until you're done. Its docs say that if your own Memberful payment fails, your transaction fee rises from 4.9% to 12.5% and you can no longer email posts.

Keep Discord roles working through the switch

Memberful's bot and Whop's bot can share a server as long as they don't share roles, and one Memberful setting decides whether lapsed members get removed.

  • Check Memberful's access setting first, under Content, then Community, then Discord. With Members with an active subscription selected, Memberful removes members from your server when their subscription lapses, including people who now pay on Whop. With All members selected, lapsed members stay and only lose their Memberful roles. Switch to All members before the first cancelled Memberful subscription expires.
  • Give Whop its own roles. Memberful warns that any role mapped to a plan can be removed from people whose membership doesn't qualify for it, so create new roles such as "Member (Whop)" with the same channel permissions.
  • Mind the role order. A Discord bot only manages roles below its own, and Whop asks for the Whop Bot role at the top of your list, then a click on Refetch roles.
  • Pick Whop's cancellation action (no action, remove the role, kick the user or remove all roles). Members link Discord on Whop and press Claim Access.
  • When the window closes, delete the old Memberful roles and remove the Memberful bot. Memberful's docs don't say what disconnecting does to roles it already handed out, so clean them up yourself.

Memberful vs Whop fees at your revenue

Memberful's 4.9% fee on top of Stripe's processing costs you 4.6 percentage points more than Whop on every US card payment, before Memberful's $49 monthly plan. At $10,000 a month, the difference is $509.

Prices as of October 2026. Sources at the end of this page.

Monthly revenue ($15 membership)Memberful StandardWhopDifference per monthDifference per year
$1,000 (about 67 payments)$147$52$95$1,140
$10,000 (about 667 payments)$1,029$520$509$6,108
$50,000 (about 3,333 payments)$4,949$2,600$2,349$28,188

How we calculated it: fees = plan price + revenue × fee percentage + $0.30 × number of payments. Memberful Standard costs $49 a month, billed month to month, plus a 4.9% transaction fee on each purchase and renewal, and your Stripe account adds 2.9% + $0.30 per US card payment. Memberful runs renewals itself, so no Stripe Billing fee applies. Whop charges 2.7% + $0.30 per card payment plus 0.5% billing on subscription charges, with no monthly fee (docs.whop.com/fees, checked October 3, 2026). Both columns assume US cards, no payout fees, no currency conversion and no taxes, rounded to whole dollars.

Three costs sit outside the table:

  • Payouts. Memberful money settles in your own Stripe account on your Stripe payout schedule. Whop pays out from your Whop balance for $2.50 per next-day ACH transfer, or 4% + $1 for an instant one, and its docs say a new account can have part of each sale held in reserve, for example 10% for 90 days. Our guide to Whop payouts and identity checks covers the timing.
  • Fraud screening. Whop lists Radar at $0.07 per transaction. If it applies to every charge, add about $47 a month at $10,000.
  • Tax. Memberful calculates and collects tax in the US, EU, UK, Canada and Australia, but you remit it yourself. Whop charges 2% per transaction for either of its tax options, and nothing if you handle tax yourself.

Plug in your own price, annual plans and international share with the Memberful vs Whop fee calculator, and see Whop's full fee schedule for disputes and international cards. This page explains published fees. It isn't financial or tax advice.

What you'll rebuild by hand

Members follow a link to Whop, but your content and a few settings need your hands.

  • Posts and newsletters (effort depends on your archive). Memberful's export docs cover members, orders, metrics, subscriptions, activity and cancellations, not posts. Copy over the posts members still use, and decide where your newsletter will be sent from before you announce.
  • Paid podcast (medium effort). Memberful doesn't host audio. It turns your host's unlisted RSS feed into a private feed for each member with an active subscription, so each member's feed stops when their Memberful subscription ends. Plan how episodes reach members on Whop.
  • WordPress paywalls (medium to high effort). If paid posts sit on your WordPress site behind Memberful's plugin, including the metered paywall it added on October 1, 2026, that site checks access through Memberful. Decide whether the content moves into Whop or the site gets a new gate.
  • Coupons and discounts (low effort). Recreate active codes as Whop promo codes, and note which referral and retention discounts you still want.
  • Group and gift subscriptions (low to medium effort). Send group managers and gift recipients claim links.
  • Email tool syncs (low effort). If Memberful syncs members to Mailchimp, Kit or another email service, reconnect that sync to Whop, for example through Whop's Zapier integration.
  • Custom fields (low effort). Answers to your signup questions are in the member export, so keep the file.

Should you switch from Memberful to Whop?

Switch if Memberful's 4.9% plus $49 is a real cost and your members know you well enough to follow a link. Stay if payouts into your own Stripe account or your WordPress setup matter more than the savings.

Switching makes sense if:

  • You bring in a few thousand dollars a month or more. At $10,000 the difference is $509 a month, or $6,108 a year.
  • You want a course, members-only chat or forums next to the membership. Whop includes them as apps, while Memberful connects to outside tools.
  • Your members want more ways to pay. Memberful supports cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link through Stripe only, while Whop's checkout also takes PayPal, Cash App, ACH and SEPA debit on subscriptions, plus crypto on one-time prices.

Stay on Memberful if:

  • You want every payment to settle in your own Stripe account. Whop holds sales in a Whop balance and can keep part of a new account's revenue in reserve.
  • Your paid content lives on your WordPress site and Memberful's plugin does the gating.
  • Your membership is small and settled. At $1,000 a month the saving is $95, and a handful of members who don't re-subscribe can erase it.

Memberful has been part of Patreon since August 2018, and many of the same trade-offs show up in our Patreon to Whop migration plan.

After the move: launch checklist

Run these checks before you send the announcement, and the last two before you close Memberful.

  • Buy your own Whop plan with a real card, then refund it, so you see the checkout and welcome flow members get.
  • Open the "Existing members" link in a private browser window and check that the trial ends on a member's Memberful expiration date.
  • Test Discord with a second account: claim access, check the Whop role appears, cancel, and check it's removed.
  • Confirm Memberful's Discord setting shows All members before the first cancelled subscription expires.
  • Replace Memberful checkout links on your website, in podcast show notes and in email footers.
  • Add your Whop payout method and finish identity verification before your biggest renewal date.
  • Export from Memberful one last time, then close the account only after the final billing period has ended.

Frequently asked questions

Can Whop Migrations move my Memberful subscribers?

Not in a standard Memberful setup. Whop Migrations moves active and trialing card subscriptions from a Stripe account you own. Memberful stores cards as Stripe customers and charges them on its own schedule, so it doesn't create Stripe subscriptions, and it deletes old ones when it imports members. If your members don't show under Billing, then Subscriptions in your Stripe Dashboard, plan on re-subscribing.

Will my members be charged twice during the switch?

Not if their Memberful auto-renew is off before their Whop trial ends. Each member's Whop trial runs to the expiration date in your Memberful export, which is when Memberful would charge next. Once they've joined Whop, turn off auto-renew with Memberful's bulk edit tool. The subscription stops at its next renewal date and the member keeps access until it expires.

What happens if I close my Memberful account?

Memberful deletes all of the account's data when you close it, so download your member, subscription, order and cancellation exports first. Close it last, after the final Memberful billing period has ended and your members have moved. Until then, keep your $49 plan paid, because Memberful's docs say a failed account payment raises its transaction fee from 4.9% to 12.5%.

How do I keep my Discord server working when I leave Memberful?

Give Whop its own Discord roles, and switch Memberful's Discord setting to All members before any cancelled Memberful subscription expires. Under its other setting, Members with an active subscription, Memberful removes lapsed members from the server, including people who now pay on Whop. Memberful also warns that roles mapped to a plan can be stripped from anyone who doesn't qualify, so never share a role between the two bots.

Is Whop cheaper than Memberful?

On US card payments, yes, at every revenue level we checked. Memberful costs $49 a month plus a 4.9% transaction fee, and Stripe adds 2.9% + $0.30. Whop has no monthly fee and charges 2.7% + $0.30, plus 0.5% on subscription charges. On a $15 monthly membership that's $1,029 against $520 at $10,000 a month. Whop adds payout fees, from $2.50 per next-day ACH transfer.

What happens to my Memberful paid podcast?

Your audio files stay with your podcast host, because Memberful doesn't host them. Memberful turns your host's unlisted RSS feed into a private feed for each member with an active subscription, so a member's feed stops once their Memberful subscription ends. Decide how episodes will reach members after the move, and put the new instructions in your announcement, before you turn off auto-renew.
